The mission of the Langages du Sud (LDS) publishing house is to reveal the richness of African heritage and artistic and cultural creation in order to transmit it. This vocation was born out of the conviction that creation and culture are fundamental drivers of development, innovation and social cohesion. The value proposition of LDS is to be a Content Creator for all types of media: books, digital, film and video, events, cultural spaces such as museums, etc. This positioning is currently structured around four areas of expertise, in which the enhancement of the African continent and its creative dynamism occupies an important place: culture, economy and sociology, sustainable development, and youth.

Langages du Sud has created 14 collections, several of which are aimed at young people and the promotion of young African talent, as well as a competition to identify and reward young artists. LDS has also developed a digital platform to promote African brands and the continent's industrial flagships (i.e. Brand YourMorocco).

 

THE ENTREPRENEUR

A business school graduate, author and publisher for 20 years, Patricia Defever created Langages du Sud after a long experience at Cherche Midi éditeur. Her achievements include consulting and development of new information technologies applied to companies, film creation, creation of numerous contents (books, scripts, screenplays) and finally the creation and development of Langages du Sud, a publishing and production company based on the African continent.

Anya

Anya is a company active in the music industry through the organisation of events, consultancy and artistic management services as well as publishing activities. Since 2014, Anya has been organising the annual Visa For Music trade fair-festival which brings together and federates music professionals and artists from Africa and the Middle East but also from elsewhere. It is the first event of its kind in Africa. In five editions, Visa for Music has managed to make its place in the landscape of major music professional meetings with 7,200 professionals attending the 232 showcases given by some 1,461 artists from 2014 to 2018.

 

THE ENTREPRENEUR

Brahim El Mazned is a cultural entrepreneur, associate of the ANYA Cultural Agency. He is also the Founding Director of Visa For Music, as well as the Artistic Director of the Timitar Festival of World Music. Selected in the Guide to Cultural Diversity "Les Aventuriers de la culture" as one of the 100 exemplary actors of sustainable cultural development around the world, Brahim El Mazned was also selected by the Moroccan weekly "Tel Quel" as one of the 100 personalities who make Morocco move. After more than twenty years of activity in the Moroccan cultural world, he has become an essential reference in the organisation of major artistic events.

Afriart Gallery

Afriart Gallery was founded in 2002 and has become a leading contemporary art gallery in East Africa. Present in two locations in Kampala, it focuses on new forms of expression and dialogue with the public. Its commitment is to create an environment where professional artists can flourish in their work and artistic careers, and to establish a place where gallery owners, curators, collectors, writers, designers and architects will find high quality, fresh and innovative artistic ideas. Gallery owners achieve this by carefully selecting artists, encouraging their participation and supporting their interactions to ensure a better experience during their stay at the Afriart Gallery. The team continually creates and implements new projects to interact with the Kampala community through artist talks, workshops, art commissions, solo and group exhibitions, internships, residencies and guest artist programmes.

 

THE ENTREPRENEUR

Daudi Karungi founded Afriart Gallery in 2002. Trained in art, he understands the difficulties young artists face. He has taken Ugandan art abroad to present it at international art fairs, museums and major exhibitions. He is also co-founder of startjournal.org, Uganda's first art critic's magazine. And in 2014, he launched the Kampala Art Biennale, of which he is now director and coordinator.

Crossroads Digital Multimedia

Crossroads Digital Multimedia, is an award-winning animation studio, training school and production house with a creative design rooted in the rich culture of African storytelling with untapped potential. Its current portfolio includes animated shorts, educational content, television commercials, awareness content and documentaries combining direct action and animation. Its mission is to form an artistic team capable of developing entertaining African stories in 3D. Capacity building and inclusion are part of the DNA of Crossroads, which organises numerous training courses and courses in animation, targeting in particular young people and women. The studio enjoys local and international recognition through the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African leaders, DISCOP (Discomics) Johannesburg, the Kalasha International Film Festival and the Uganda Film Festival.

 

THE ENTREPRENEUR

David Masanso is the founder and director of Crossroads digital multimedia Ltd. A graduate in 3D Animation from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, he has over 15 years experience as an animator and animation trainer. He has led and worked on several animation projects for non-governmental organisations, government and corporate television advertising. He has directed one animated short film and produced four animated shorts that have won 8 awards. As one of the pioneers of the animation industry in Uganda, he has trained more than 250 animation students in learning projects that have enabled them to develop their skills while earning a living.

Among other achievements : David co-founded Women in Animation Uganda; as well as Crossroads Kids Animation club, which organizes art training programmes for children. He has been a Discop expert and lecturer (2018, South Africa) and a judge at the Kalasha International TV and Film Market in Kenya. He is also a trainer in animation workshops at various film festivals.

  • Produce and broadcast Mukago, a new animated adventure of local African games where the fierce competition of four best friends leads to difficulties that the children will have to overcome.

Fezah

Fezah, a technology and entertainment company serving African musicians and event professionals, offers two mobile applications.

  • Fezah Booking: the application connects musicians to festivals, concerts, venues and companies through the use of booking data and the broadcasting of songs on the radio.
  • Airplay Monitoring: the company, which monitors radio stations across the country, provides real-time notifications and reports to musicians when their music is playing.

To complete its range of services to promote musicians, Fezah organises monthly live shows open to the public and sponsors.

 

THE ENTREPRENEUR

Elijah Kitaka is co-founder and CEO of Fezah, a technology and entertainment company. He has a total of 18 years of professional experience in the technology, banking, social security and entertainment sectors, at various levels of responsibility. Previously, he worked for Google for 5 years as Head of Strategic Partnerships and then as Head of Startups. He is also the creator and presenter of Uganda's oldest jazz radio programme, Jazz Evenings, a weekly programme on Radio One FM 90. On air for the past 15 years, the show has played a major role in discovering and showcasing talent to the general public and industry players.

  • Increase the average income of the musical artists registered on the platform
  • Acquire equipment and set up a rehearsal studio to improve the booking system and live concerts and thus offer a complete solution to the artists.

Karoninka

Karoninka is a film production and directing company which, during its fourteen years of existence, has established itself with a large number of documentary and fiction films, institutional films, video clips, etc. From Congo, a doctor to save women (first film about Doctor Denis Mukwege, Nobel Peace Prize 2018) to Waliden, child of others, not forgetting Senegalese women and Islam, Karoninka's filmography is very committed. This experience, which extends beyond the borders of Senegal, both in Africa and Europe, has enabled the company to acquire a network allowing it to meet the demands of the profession.

 

THE ENTREPRENEUR

Angèle Diabang trained at the Forum Média Centre in Dakar (2003), at FEMIS in Paris and at the Filmakademie in Germany. In 2005, she directed her first film, Mon beau sourire, which was acclaimed by international critics; followed by four other documentaries, including Congo, un médecin pour sauver les femmes, the first film about Doctor Denis Mukwege, winner of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize. Angèle then moves on to fiction with her short films Ma coépouse bien-aimée (Clermont-Ferrand 2019 selection, Best Screenplay Award at the Émergence festival in Togo) and Un air de kora (Bronze Foal at FESPACO 2019 and Best Short Film at WADA 2019, Nigeria; Best Short Film in Kigali, Bujumbura, Cotonou, Dakar). She also won the ECOWAS Best Director Award at FESPACO 2019. From 2014 to 2016, Angèle was President of the Board of Directors of SODAV, Senegal's copyright collective management society.

Optimiste Produktions

For 20 years, Optimiste Produktions has been producing phonographic and audiovisual productions and organising events to promote urban cultures in Senegal, including the international urban music festival YAKAAR (formerly the Hip-Hop Awards) and three editions of the Yakaar Young Talents Rufisque springboard competition. Optimiste initiated the YAKAAR (Hope in Wolof) centre, a creative space with a recording and rehearsal studio, clothing and screen printing workshops, a documentation area and a multipurpose room. These activities are complemented by training to strengthen the capacities of young artists and technicians. Optimiste has contributed to setting up Perceptive, the first performance hall with a capacity of more than 1000 seats in the Rufisque department.

Fatoumata PINDRA (founding member): Holder of a Master 2 in Audit / Management Control, Fatoumata has extensive professional experience in the field of organisation management and partner relations. She has been involved for several years in various development programmes, as well as the production of events and cultural products on the Senegalese scene.

Safouane PINDRA (founding member): A graduate in production management from Inirep (France), he has completed his curriculum with several training courses in the management of shows, artists and venues. With more than 25 years of experience in the musical field, Safouane has managed major events in Senegal and West Africa. He has also been the manager of some twenty African artists and groups.

Kalanexpo

Marie Kanla (co-founder): committed alongside her husband in the fight against deforestation, Marie is responsible for marketing and sales at Kalanexpo. Based in Ouagadougou, she manages the company's relations with its national and international clients.
